Amy Millar and Truman win 2019 Caledon Cup at Canadian Show Jumping Tournament
The 2019 Canadian Show Jumping Tournament is in the books, with Perth, Ontario’s Amy Millar and Truman claiming their first Caledon Cup championship last week at Caledon Equestrian Park (CEP).
The pair clinched the victory in the three-phase contest with an impressive come-from-behind performance in the $40,000 Caledon Cup Phase 3, presented by Presented by Henry Equestrian Insurance (HEP), Aviva Insurance and Edge Mutual on Sunday (Sept. 22).
Truman, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood owned by Irish Oaks & Millar Brooke Farm, were among six of 30 starting competitors to go clear in the first round and advance to the jump-off.
Their time of 40.72 seconds was more than a second and a half faster than runners-up Jill Henselwood and Eblesse. Hyde Moffat and Gisborne VDL were third in the class.

“The course today was tricky. Rails fell all over the ring in different places. You really had to get everything just right to go clean,” said Millar, who added $1,000 bonus for winning while sporting a HEP saddle pad.
“My horse was really trying hard today, so that makes it easier when they’re like that,” she added.
The path to Caledon Cup glory wasn’t an easy one for Millar, with Irish rider Daniel and Coyle and CHS Krooze poised to claim the title after the first two rounds earlier in the week.
Phase 1 of the Caledon Cup presented by RAM Equestrain on Thursday (Sept. 19), the Table-A speed portion of the competition, saw Coyle and CHS Krooze place second behind 17-year-old Sam Walker from Nobleton and MarBill Hill Farm’s Coralissa. Coyle also placed third in the class riding Leilani. Millar and Truman were fifth.
Coyle and CHS Krooze followed that performance up with a victory in the second phase on Friday, with Millar placing second riding her second entry Ericson, and Mark Kinsella and Stern Dei Folletti in third.

Millar and Truman placed 12th in the second round, but with Coyle and CHS Krooze finishing outside the top 20 in the third and final phase, Millar and Truman were able to jump ahead in points with their Phase 3 win to claim the 2019 Caledon Cup Champion presented by RAM Equestrian .
“I think the course designer Catsy Cruz did a wonderful job all week,” she said. “I was lucky to have the last position in the jump-off, because I knew exactly what I had to do.”
The Caledon Cup was only one of many highlights of the 2019 Canadian Show Jumping Tournament, which ran from Sept. 18-22.
The Canadian Young Horse Championships, presented by Lothlorien, saw three divisions compete throughout out the week in another multi-phase context including five, six and seven-year-old horses.
The first phase of all three age groups kicked off Wednesday (Sept. 18), with William Hickey and North Star’s Cindy Z claiming the red ribbon in $500 Round 1 – 5-year-old Jumper division. Sydney Hewins and WKM Bit of a Pickle were second, while Charlotte Jacobs and Jiselle placed third.

Jacobs and I-Am-Unostar, also owned by North Star, won the first heat in the 6-year-old Jumper division, with Rachel Schnurr and Narco BZ and Daniel Coyle and Ibiza in third.
Coyle took top prize among the 7-year-olds riding Ariel Grange’s Amalia. Jennifer Mattell and M Quality were second, followed by Beth Underhill and Cowboy with the white ribbon.
The second round in all three divisions came Friday, seeing Hewins and WKM Bit of a Pickle, owned by Wilfred McKay, win the $2,000 second round for the 5-year-olds and Hickey and Cindy Z in second. William Dow and Jordiada Bloom were third in that class.
Coyle and Ibiza were first in the $2,000 second round for the 6-year-olds, with Jacobs and I-Am-Unostar in second and Alex Jamael and Incanto Nottumbo rounding out the top three finishers.

In the $2,000 seven-year-old second round, it would be Mattel and M Quality in first, Hugh Graham and Quality Time 3E in second, and Carly Campbell Cooper riding Charlie Chaplin in third.
The $5,000 third and final round in the 5-year-old division on Friday saw Hickey and Cindy Z wrap things up the division win with the red ribbon, followed by runners-up Hewins and WKM Bit of a Pickle and Dow and Jordiada Bloom in the second and third respectively.

The third rounds for the six and seven-year-olds came Sunday, with Coyle and Ibiza securing the overall win with a victory in the $5,000 final round. Jamael and Incanto Nottumo were second with Hickey and Idalgo rounding out the top three.

Mattel and M Quality won the $10,000 Round 3 in the 7-year-old division to claim the overall championship. Beth Underhill and Cowboy placed second, while Coyle and Amalia finished off the week’ competition with a third-place finish in the final round.

It wasn’t just horses and riders competing last week with Laura Bolton, a groom with Santerre Show Stables, being named winner of the McKee-Pownall Jumper Grooms Class. “Professional Equine Grooms are a valuable asset to both the equine veterinary and horse showing communities. We feel it is important to showcase the importance and impact Equine Grooms have on the industry, and the valuable role they play in the health and maintenance of our equine,” writes McKee Pownall Equine Services on its website at www.mpequine.com.

Abigail Fox was named 2019 Paul Scriver Memorial Award winner. The award presented annually to the Junior/Amateur 1.20m or 1.30m Division Champion accumulating the highest number of points in their respective divisions at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament.

“Established in 1997, The Paul Scriver Memorial Award is dedicated in memory of Paul Scriver. Paul was very involved in the horse industry and, although a talented rider, preferred to stay behind-the-scenes. He worked for such notable names as Danny Foster and Barb Mitchell at Heritage Farms and David and Sandi Ballard at Looking Back Farms, but it was after taking on the responsibility of driving horse trailers that Paul so sadly lost his life.”
The competition moves into the world-class indoor ring at Caledon Equestrian Park with Fall Finale, the final show on the 2019 show schedule at the park.
